Stuurbaard Bakkebaard
A truly genre-defying band that challenges every label you try to stick on them. Is it neo psyche-delica, experimental pop, art rock? The critics, and AI for what it’s worth, don’t agree. Under the name Stuurbaard Bakkebaard and since ’96, this trio released five albums and played hundreds of shows in their home country the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and South-Africa. At recent shows – flying under the radar, testing before recording – new songs began to appear in the set. No announcements, no build-up, just dropped straight into the heart of the crowds. They embraced the band’s new sound that’s centered around fuzzed out slide bass guitar, drums, bent-language vocals and electric guitar. Despite comparisons made with bands as diverse as early IDLES, CAN, Shellac and even Beasty Boys, the band’s musical style was mostly described as “a genre unto themselves”. Now, both on the record as on stage, SBBB’s sound evolved into something more heavy, raw and angular, visceral, and in a weird way charming and very danceable.
